OAU RESTORES 50 TOWN BUSES AS CAMPUS TRANSPORT CRISIS PERSISTS

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has reinstated 50 Town buses back on campus, for student transportation as authorities move to ease renewed mobility challenges on campus.
The Great Ife Students’ Union Transport Management Commission announced that the buses will resume operations from today, Monday, 8th June, 2026, serving students along the Mayfair, Lagere, and Sabo routes at previously approved fare rates.
The development comes months after a major disruption to campus transport earlier in April 2026, when students staged a widespread protest over the university’s newly introduced transportation system. The demonstration halted movement across campus and forced the shutdown of transport operations.
Following the unrest, the university senate approved a three-week mid-semester break on April 28, 2026, aimed at restoring order and allowing engagements between stakeholders.
However, when academic activities resumed in June, students reportedly returned to the same transport challenges, with the new system still facing complaints over efficiency and capacity.
The situation has now prompted a fresh intervention, with the Town/Gboro buses brought back into service as an additional layer to the existing campus transport network.
The university had earlier introduced 50 buses and 40 tricycles donated by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, describing the initiative as a welfare-driven effort to modernise mobility and improve access within the institution.
Alongside the restored Town buses operations, the internal shuttle system running between Campus Gate and the Students’ Union Building will continue to function.
The Students’ Union says discussions are ongoing with relevant authorities to finalise pricing for the newer shuttle services, with official rates expected to be announced once agreed.
University authorities say the latest adjustment forms part of ongoing efforts to stabilise transport services and address student concerns as academic activities continue on campus.
