‎One of the most disturbing incidents reportedly occurred around the Alex Duduyemi Lecture Theatre at about 5:00 p.m., where five students from the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development were said to have been engaged in an academic field exercise involving insect collection.

‎A statement issued by the Agricultural Extension Student Society of Nigeria (AESSON OAU) alleged that the students were accosted by an individual who accused them of wearing “cult-like beads.” Despite the students’ clarification, the situation reportedly escalated.

‎According to the statement, the assailant allegedly forced the students to kneel under threats, Slapped one of the students, Confiscated their mobile phones and abducted one student, who was later released at maintenance area, not too far from the campus gate.

‎The incident reportedly took place in broad daylight and lasted less than 30 minutes, raising serious questions about campus security response.

‎In another reported case off campus, a student was allegedly assaulted by a commercial motorcyclist, who was said to be armed with a gun. The student reportedly sustained injuries before assistance arrived.

‎These incidents are reportedly part of at least two other cult-related or robbery attacks on students within the university community on the same day.

‎Reacting to the incidents, the Great Ife Students’ Union (GISU) issued an urgent security alert, describing the attacks as “barbaric and unacceptable.”

‎In the statement signed by the Union’s leadership, the Union confirmed that four robbery incidents had been recorded and stated that Union officers and security volunteers were working closely with the University Security Unit and relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended.

‎The Union advised students to avoid moving alone, especially at night or in poorly lit areas, remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, promptly report suspicious activities.

‎The Union also disclosed that it is finalizing a dedicated Emergency Response Line for students, while providing interim emergency contacts.

‎The Faculty of Administration Students’ Association (FADSA OAU) also issued an official statement condemning the attacks, describing the incidents as alarming and contrary to the safety standards expected within the university community.

‎Similarly, AESSON OAU strongly condemned the alleged cult-like intimidation and physical assault, demanding immediate disciplinary and legal action against the perpetrators and stronger measures to prevent cult-related harassment on campus.

‎Student leaders across faculties have continued to call for justice for affected students, improved campus security surveillance, and swift intervention by university authorities.

‎In the late evening of today, the Students’ Union commenced physical sensitization across halls of residence and lecture rooms to educate students on safety precautions and encourage the prompt reporting of suspicious activities.

‎As of the time of filing this report, the university management and security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the incidents.

‎This remains a developing story.
