Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced Sunday Amuke, a 23-year-old graduate of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, as the institution’s best graduating student with a CGPA of 4.90.

Amuke, who hails from Enugu State and also bears the Igbo name Chukwudi, described his academic journey as “interesting,” noting that it began with unexpected challenges. Despite scoring 99/100 in MTH101 and 91/100 in CHM101, his first-semester GPA stood at 4.44 short of a first-class grade.

However, he said the strong performance in the university’s difficult “yellow and white house” courses strengthened his belief that he could excel. That belief, coupled with consistent hard work and what he described as God’s grace, led him to achieve six 5.0 GPAs in the remaining nine semesters of his programme.

Reflecting on the habits that drove his academic excellence, Amuke said he prioritized thorough preparation for every course and made deliberate efforts to understand each subject in relation to the teaching style of the lecturers involved.

He acknowledged facing several challenging courses but maintained that investing extra time in understanding the material made all the difference. Amuke credited supportive lecturers, seniors, and close friends for inspiring him throughout his studies.

He received the inaugural OAU Star Award in his department and was also a Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) scholarship awardee. Beyond academics, Amuke distinguished himself through extensive extracurricular engagements.

A passionate teacher, he tutored mathematics in multiple tutorial centres from his 200 to 400 levels and authored four widely used mathematics past-question booklets. He also organized free tutorials for classmates and worked as an online math tutor, including serving as a Math Expert on Photomath.

He further developed intermediate-level programming skills in Flutter/Dart and React.js. Recalling a particularly difficult period, Amuke noted that his PHY101 examination which resulted in his only C grade was the toughest moment of his university journey.

Overcoming that setback, he said, was crucial to finishing as the best graduating student. Speaking on his achievement, he described the experience as “surreal,” expressing deep gratitude to God and everyone who contributed to his success. Amuke revealed that he plans to pursue further studies and hopes to secure a fully funded international scholarship during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, to obtain a PHD.
