Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, gathered at Oduduwa Hall for an engaging session of The Open Up Circle, a youth-focused discussion platform founded by media personality Amanda Dara. The event, which started at 12:00 p.m., brought together students from different faculties to discuss issues affecting young people in Nigeria.Organized by The Open Up Circle team, the event created an open space where students freely shared ideas and different opinions were welcomed. The discussions covered topics such as personal responsibility, the economy, money management, relationships, and the challenges facing Generation Z.
The event began with an energetic atmosphere as students were welcomed with interactive activities and giveaways. The event producer later spoke to the audience, explaining the aim of The Open Up Circle as a platform for young people to share their views and discuss important issues. He also mentioned that the event was streamed live on YouTube.
Amanda Dara was warmly welcomed by students as she introduced the first topic: “We are products of our choices despite the economy.” The statement led to different opinions. Some students said personal choices matter a lot in shaping success, while others said the economy and environment also play a big role in people’s outcomes.
The next topic was, “We do not have a money problem; we have a discipline problem.” Some students agreed, saying discipline helps in managing money no matter the amount. Others disagreed, saying high cost of living and low income make it hard to manage money well.
Students also discussed the claim that “Gen Z Nigerians are more entitled and less hardworking.” Many students disagreed with this, saying young Nigerians are hardworking and creative despite challenges. Others said entitlement exists but does not describe all young people.
Another discussion focused on whether dating in university is more of a distraction than something meaningful. Students shared different views, with some saying it affects academics, while others said it can be balanced with studies.
Audience members were also allowed to share their opinions, which made the discussions more interactive and engaging.
The event ended with the presentation of prizes. Eniola Kolawole won the ₦100,000 Open Up Circle Creators Grant sponsored by Pocket Moni and also won the ₦100,000 Lush Hair Challenge sponsored by Lush Hair. Ayomide was awarded ₦150,000 as the Best Contributing Student for his active participation.
Overall, The Open Up Circle gave students a chance to share ideas, listen to others, and talk about real issues affecting their lives.
