Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, staged a protest over the institution’s new transportation system, including the recently introduced CNG buses and tricycles, donated by the first Lady of Nigeria.

The operation of the CNG buses and tricycles was brought to a halt, resulting in no movement within the university campus.

The demonstration, which began at about 8:00 a.m., started from within the campus and moved to the main gate, before extending beyond the university premises to Ede Road, thereby disrupting movement both within and outside the campus.

Students gathered at the campus gate, expressing dissatisfaction over the new transportation system and the eviction notice issued to residents of Awo Hall Blocks 7 and 8. Protesters marched with placards around the gate area and later extended their demonstration outside the university.

Although Students’ Union officials were not initially present at the protest ground, they later arrived, explaining that they had been mobilizing students across various halls of residence ahead of the demonstration.

The protest was described as peaceful, with no reports of vandalism or destruction of property, in line with earlier assurances by the Students’ Union.

The University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, was also present at the protest scene.

The demonstration continued for several hours before it gradually dispersed at about 11:39 a.m., after key announcements were made by the Students’ Union leadership.

Addressing students, the Union President, Adelani David Oluwatodimu (Itabi), declared:

“Until the transportation issue is resolved, no academic activities will continue on campus.”He also announced that the renovation of Awo Hall Blocks 7 and 8 would be halted until the end of the session, signaling an escalation in the Union’s stance.

In response to this, the University’s Senate Division is expected to meet to deliberate on the transportation crisis, as academic activities across campus remain suspended.

The protest marks a significant turn in the ongoing standoff between students and University Management, with increasing pressure on authorities to provide immediate and effective solutions to the transportation challenges.
