ELECTRICITY CRISIS DEEPENS IN NEW MARKET HOSTELS: AGNES, SHA-DEY-RIN, AND NICE CARE

‎By Anjolaoluwa Adedeji

Residents of the newly opened Agnes, Sha-dey-rin, and Nice Care hostels are currently weary of a persistent electricity crisis and have raised a formal petition to the Division of Student Affairs.

‎The Genesis of the Unrest:

The situation escalated during the late hours of Tuesday, January 13th, as students tired of the indifferent attitude of the hostel management, decided to take action. The primary catalyst for this movement was the students' inability to study for ongoing university tests.

‎Residents pointed out that despite being promised 24/7 power supply prior to payment, they currently receive barely four hours of electricity, which frequently cuts off at inconvenient hours.

Failed Solutions and Communication Gaps:

The temporary solar energy solution provided by the hostel management has failed to serve the purpose outlined in the initial agreement. Furthermore, students reported that the WhatsApp group chat created for resident-management communication is frequently "locked" after residents complain, effectively stifling feedback and preventing solutions.

‎Management's Defense and the Protest:

Hostel management claimed that a delay in power restoration was due to a promised transformer from the university.

Refusing to accept further delays, students stood united on Tuesday night and resolved to march to the DSA the following morning. By the early hours of Wednesday, January 14th, students marched in significant numbers to the Division of Student Affairs to demand action.

Resolution and Next Steps:

‎A successful meeting was held involving the Vice Dean of the DSA, several residents, and three representatives from each hostel’s management. During the proceedings, the Vice Dean clarified that the school had never promised a transformer to the private hostel managements.

The meeting concluded with the following resolutions:

‎The hostel management is required to provide their own transformer.

As an immediate temporary measure, the solar panel capacity must be increased to provide more hours of electricity to the residents.

Management must ensure improvements in the temporary supply until a permanent transformer is installed.

Residents now look forward to the immediate implementation of the increased solar supply while awaiting the permanent installation of a transformer.
