OAU STUDENT UNION SECURES POLICE ACTION AFTER STUDENT ATTACKS

In response to an alarming incident of security breaches, including a violent robbery at Moremi Estate and a machete attack on a student resident at D & D Hostel, the Great Ife Students’ Union Security Committee of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has taken swift action to confront the growing concerns over student safety.

According to a press release issued on Monday, the Security Committee reported that one student was injured in the D & D Hostel attack, sustaining a machete wound to the head. The incident has sent shockwaves through the student body, inciting calls for immediate action.

Without any further delay, representatives of the Students’ Union Security Committee visited the Osun State Police Command Headquarters, where they were received by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of Operations. The DCP, standing in for the Commissioner of Police, expressed intense displeasure at the sudden security decline and gave immediate orders to all police units in Ile-Ife to take steps towards intervention in areas heavily populated by students.

After this last meeting, the Student Union Committee, accompanied by two fully armed police patrol teams and Divisional Police Officers from both Moore and Modakeke Police Stations, came to campus for an on-site assessment. They visited the D & D Hostel and led a joint team  surveillance operation with the Nigeria Police Force to identify potential entry and exit points used by the perpetrators.

The Committee has also announced plans to release an emergency contact number to enable students to report suspicious activity or request any assistance. In the meantime , students are urged to use the active Students’ Union Security Committee hotline.

In a reassuring message, the Students’ Union assured its unwavering commitment to student safety, promising continued collaboration with the law enforcers and other stakeholders to secure the university environment.

“Your safety and welfare remain our utmost priority,” the release from the SU stated, urging all students to remain vigilant and report any security concerns immediately.
